This set leans on his Impulse! years in the early 1960s, the era of the classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, when his sound grew from fierce virtuosity into something searching and devotional.

"In a Sentimental Mood" pairs him with Duke Ellington's piano for one of the most graceful meetings in jazz, and "My One and Only Love" sets his tenor beside Johnny Hartman's velvet baritone. "Alabama", written in response to the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, is a slow, mournful elegy of startling power, while "Crescent" shows the quartet at its most hymn-like and patient.

The collection opens with the first movement of A Love Supreme and closes with a long live reading of his signature waltz, so the arc from intimacy to all-out intensity feels complete. Tender ballads sit comfortably beside modal explorations, with no weak moments.

For newcomers it is an ideal first stop, and for longtime fans it is a beautifully sequenced listen that captures why Coltrane still matters so much.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/John_Coltrane-Essential_John_Coltrane_2LP.jpg?v=1793128054
