The front line reads like a roll call of the avant-garde, with Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson on trumpet alongside Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown and John Tchicai on saxophones.

"Ascension (Edition I)" and "Ascension (Edition II)" each run close to forty minutes, alternating between ferocious collective passages and individual solos that burst out of the din. The two performances take different paths through the same material, and hearing them back to back reveals just how much was being invented on the spot.

Underneath it all, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones and second bassist Art Davis hold the storm together with remarkable force, while Bob Thiele's production keeps every voice vivid inside the roar.

Divisive when it first appeared and now regarded as a cornerstone of free jazz, Ascension remains a thrilling, demanding listen.
