jawbreaker-bivouac
Jawbreaker - Bivouac

Jawbreaker's Bivouac is a punk record that refuses to sit still, and it remains one of the cornerstone documents of early emo.

Released in 1992, the trio's second album followed a punishing tour behind Unfun that nearly ended the band. Blake Schwarzenbach, Chris Bauermeister and Adam Pfahler regrouped in San Francisco's Mission District, wrote through the summer of 1991 and cut the songs at Razor's Edge with Billy Anderson behind the desk. It is often called their most collaborative record, with Bauermeister writing lyrics for several tracks and all three shaping the arrangements.

The album fades in on Shield Your Eyes, a droning, bruised opener, before the band starts pulling in several directions at once, from heavy, Helmet-style crunch to post-punk tension and hooks that refuse to play nice. Chesterfield King is the one everybody knows, a tender, novelistic song about love and mortality that turns a 7-Eleven encounter into something close to short fiction. Donatello sets a spoken sample over a noisy instrumental passage, and the closing title track stretches out for around ten minutes, borrowing its name from a nature documentary about ant colonies.

Schwarzenbach's hoarse, aching delivery sells every confession.

Decades on, bands still borrow from its blueprint, and the vinyl sleeve carries the full original cover drawing in all its strange glory.
