Mascis handled nearly everything himself, singing and playing guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, with a handful of friends adding colour, including Ken Maiuri on piano, Pall Jenkins and Mark Mulcahy on vocals, and Cat Power's Chan Marshall stepping in on one song.

Acoustic guitars lead the way, but this is still unmistakably Mascis, with that weary, cracked voice and flashes of electric lead slicing through the calm. Me Again opens the record, and Every Morning, which earned a playful video starring Fred Armisen, carries an easy, breezy charm. Wide Awake pairs his drawl with Chan Marshall's voice to lovely effect, and Heal the Star rounds out a set of songs that feel like late-afternoon conversations with an old friend.

The mood is reflective without ever turning mopey, and the melodies linger long after the needle lifts.

For Dinosaur Jr. devotees curious about his quieter side, or anyone who likes their indie rock unplugged and unhurried, this is a warm, rewarding record that sits beautifully on a turntable.
