Mascis produced it himself and invited a few friends into the room, including Kurt Vile, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, Pall Jenkins and violinist Sophie Trudeau.

The title track "Several Shades of Why" sets the mood with a drifting, melancholic melody and that unmistakable cracked voice. "Listen to Me" opens the record with quiet urgency, while "Not Enough" and "Is It Done" show how naturally his melodies settle into a gentler setting. Flute, violin and slide guitar drift in and out, adding colour without ever crowding the songs.

What surprises most is how much of his guitar personality survives the switch. Even unplugged, the lead lines bend and wander with the same sideways logic that defined his electric work, and the hushed setting makes every wobble and sigh feel closer.

It is a quiet, generous record that has aged gracefully, and a natural late-night companion to the louder corners of the Mascis catalogue.
