Hearing them side by side is a reminder of how quickly Beam grew from bedroom whisperer into a songwriter with big, layered ambitions, without ever losing the softness at the centre.

Plenty of people met Iron & Wine through "Such Great Heights", his feather-light cover of The Postal Service that turned an electronic pop song into a lullaby. New Order's "Love Vigilantes" gets the same gentle treatment, and The Flaming Lips' "Waitin' for a Superman" becomes something close to a hymn. The set closes with "The Trapeze Swinger", a long, unhurried ballad that unfolds like a letter read aloud, and many fans count it among the best things Beam has written.

For anyone who wore out The Creek Drank the Cradle or Our Endless Numbered Days, this is the missing shelf of the story. Every track here earns its place.
