His tone was bright and nasal in the best way, full of street wit and sudden tenderness, and his improvised soneos could turn a song into a conversation with the dance floor. Few singers have ever sounded so at home in a groove.

The hits arrive early. "El Todopoderoso" opens the album on a devotional note, its praise carried by Lavoe's soaring lead and the band's punchy, swinging montuno. "Rompe Saragüey," his take on a Chappottín y Sus Estrellas classic, became one of his signature numbers, while "Mi Gente" is a joyous call to the people that grew into a live anthem. "Emborráchame de Amor" shows off the softer, romantic side of his phrasing.

Nearly five decades on, La Voz still sounds like a packed Saturday night uptown. It's an ideal starting point for anyone discovering salsa's golden era, and a natural shelf companion for those who already know every word.
