It is also the first Gorillaz album released through the band's own Kong label, with sessions that wandered from Mumbai, Jaipur and Varanasi to Miami, Los Angeles, London and Damascus.

The opening title track grows out of a Rajasthani folk melody, with Dennis Hopper's voice drifting between Anoushka Shankar's sitar and the sarods of Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash. From there the record keeps changing shape. "The Happy Dictator" pairs Albarn with Sparks for wry, bouncing pop, "The God Of Lying" lets IDLES rattle the cage, and "Damascus" puts Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey in the same room. Archival vocals from Bobby Womack, Tony Allen and Mark E. Smith feel like old friends stopping by.

Produced by Gorillaz with James Ford, Samuel Egglenton and Remi Kabaka Jr., it plays best as one long, unbroken climb, which is how Hewlett says it should be heard.

Four sides, a lot of altitude, and plenty of ghosts worth listening to.
