gorgoroth-instinctus-bestialis-1
Gorgoroth - Instinctus Bestialis

Gorgoroth's Instinctus Bestialis is a lean, vicious blast of Norwegian black metal, the ninth studio album from the band guitarist Infernus has steered through decades of upheaval.

Released in 2015, six years after Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt, it introduced vocalist Atterigner, whose rasp gives the songs a fresh, feral edge. It was also the final record with bassist Bøddel, who died only months after its release. Infernus wrote all of the music and co-produced the album with drummer Tomas Asklund, with the sessions taking place across the closing months of 2013.

At just over half an hour, nothing here wastes a second. Radix Malorum tears straight out of the gate, Dionysian Rite churns with ritual menace, and Ad Omnipotens Aeterne Diabolus builds a longer, more suffocating atmosphere from tremolo riffs and pounding drums. Kala Brahman sways with a darker, almost hypnotic weight before the short Awakening brings the curtain down.

The cover borrows a painting called Christ in Limbo, which suits the album's blasphemous fire perfectly. For collectors following the Gorgoroth discography on vinyl, this is the sound of a veteran band sharpening its blade rather than resting on its legend, and it hits hard from the first riff to the last.
