Lightfoot had come up through the sixties folk circuit, and here he widened the frame with richer arrangements, including orchestrations by Randy Newman on two of the songs. It was also the first of his studio albums to feature longtime bassist Rick Haynes.

"If You Could Read My Mind" is the obvious centerpiece, a quietly devastating song about a marriage coming apart, carried by fingerpicked guitar and strings that swell without ever crowding him. His take on Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" was among the earliest recorded versions of that song, while "Sit Down Young Stranger" shows the plainspoken, poetic storytelling that made him a songwriter's songwriter. Every lyric sounds lived in rather than written.

Warm and unhurried, this is a record built for late evenings and a good chair, the kind that rewards close listening. The heavyweight audiophile pressing gives his rich baritone and all those delicate acoustic details plenty of room to breathe.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Gordon_Lightfoot-If_You_Could_Read_My_Mind_Rhino_Reserve.jpg?v=1793976778
