It topped the UK albums chart and gave electronic music a new kind of frontman: detached, androgynous and slightly alien, a template that industrial bands, synth-pop acts and countless producers would study closely for decades.

"Cars" is the obvious landmark, a chart-topping single built on one of pop's most recognizable synth riffs and a lyric about feeling safest sealed away from the world. "Metal" hums with menace, "Films" stalks forward on a skeletal, insistent drum pattern, and "Complex" offers a rare moment of melancholy tenderness from an artist who usually kept his feelings at arm's length.

The whole album runs on tension between machine precision and very human anxiety, and that is what keeps it from sounding dated, even now that synthesizers are everywhere.

Nearly five decades on, it still sounds like the future arriving early, and no new wave or electronic collection feels complete without a copy on the shelf.
