Numan has never been content to coast on his early hits, and here the late-seventies classics sit shoulder to shoulder with the darker, industrial-weighted material he has made since, including songs from Savage: Songs from a Broken World and Intruder. His band hits hard, the synths roar rather than chirp, and the crowd is audibly with him from the opening moments.

"Down in the Park" arrives early, slow and ominous, a reminder of how strange and prescient those Tubeway Army songs still sound. "My Name Is Ruin" features his daughter Persia, whose voice adds an eerie generational echo to one of his strongest modern songs. Then come the big ones, as "Cars" and a closing "Are 'Friends' Electric?" land with the force of anthems that have soundtracked decades of devotion.

For anyone who was in the room it's a souvenir to treasure, and for everyone else it's proof that Numan's live show still sounds fierce, heavy and thoroughly current. Few artists mark a thousandth gig this convincingly.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Gary_Numan-1000_Live_at_the_Electric_Ballroom_London_3LP.jpg?v=1793977314
