Freed from the limits of a 45, those tunes stretch out into long, hypnotic workouts, giving every groove room to build until it boils over.

Alu Jon Jonki Jon opens the set with chattering guitars and blaring horns, while Jeun Ko Ku (Chop 'n Quench), his first major hit at home, struts with irresistible swagger. Je'nwi Temi (Don't Gag Me) closes on a defiant note, its title alone hinting at the political fire that would soon define his music.

Underneath it all sits Tony Allen, whose drumming makes fiendishly complex rhythm feel as natural as walking. Fela's saxophone and electric piano trade space with a muscular brass section and a bank of congas, and the whole band moves with the looseness of musicians who know these songs inside out.

For anyone tracing the roots of Afrobeat, this is required listening, and the green and red discs give it a fittingly bold home.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Fela_Kuti-Afrodisiac_50th_Anniversary_Edition_2LP_Green_Red.jpg?v=1793641653
