Few songwriters have turned grief, loneliness and family tragedy into music this warm, and fewer still could follow it with a wink.

It opens with "Novocaine for the Soul", the woozy, sample-laced single that introduced E to the world, then moves through the lullaby glow of "My Beloved Monster" and the soft-focus romance of "Fresh Feeling". Later, "Hey Man (Now You're Really Living)" makes a defiant case for loving life, scars and all. A Jon Brion remix, a live recording and a deadpan cover version keep things unpredictable, proof that Everett never took the idea of a hits package too seriously.

Across four sides, it plays like a mixtape from a friend who knows exactly when to make you laugh and when to let a sad song breathe.

For newcomers it is the ideal front door, and for longtime fans it is a reunion with old companions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Eels-Meet_The_Eels_Essential_Eels_Vol._1_1996-2006_2LP_Yellow.jpg?v=1793816037
