Producer Robert Margouleff helped sharpen the sound, and the band's red energy dome hats soon became one of the most recognizable images of the era. Underneath the matching outfits was a group of Akron misfits with a deeply skeptical view of consumer culture, and this is where that worldview finally found a mass audience.

"Whip It" is the obvious headline, a deadpan parody of can-do motivational slogans that became an unlikely hit. "Girl U Want" rides a spiky, insistent riff, while "Gates of Steel" builds into one of the band's most anthemic moments.
