Released by 4AD, it was the last album the pair made while they were a couple, and it pushed further from their early post-punk roots toward medieval, Middle Eastern and devotional music. Perry named it after the way water snakes across the Earth when seen from above, a fitting image for music that flows rather than marches.

Opener "The Host of Seraphim" is the album's towering centerpiece, Gerrard's wordless vocal rising over a slow, mournful drone, and it later found a second life in the film Baraka. "Severance" and "In the Kingdom of the Blind the One-Eyed Are Kings" give Perry's rich baritone room to roam, while the brief, haunting "Song of Sophia" shows how much the duo could say in very little time.

Few records sound so completely out of step with their era, in the best possible way.
