Bassist Will Heggie had left, so Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie recorded as a duo, producing it themselves at a studio in Edinburgh and writing most of the songs on the spot. Guthrie later admitted little of it was planned, and that spontaneity is all over the record. Where the debut Garlands leaned on religious imagery, these are love songs, even if the words are often impossible to pin down.

That is the magic. Fraser's voice starts to behave like an instrument, swooping and fluttering over Guthrie's cavernous guitars and drum machine pulse. Sugar Hiccup is the most immediately gorgeous moment, all shimmer and sweetness, while Five Ten Fiftyfold threads a smoky saxophone line through the haze. In Our Angelhood moves at a brisker, more urgent clip, and Musette and Drums closes the album in a swirl of reverb and drama.

The record pointed the way to everything the band, and a generation of dream pop and shoegaze acts, would do next.

On vinyl, this is the place to hear the Cocteau Twins sound being born.
