charlie-parr-rooming-house
Charlie Parr - Rooming House

Charlie Parr turns a Minnesota rooming house into a stage on Rooming House, a 2026 folk opera of hard times, small mercies and neighbors doing their best.

The Duluth bluesman, known for his 12-string and National steel guitars and his raw, fingerpicked country blues, built these songs from his own years living in Minneapolis rooming houses. The seven-song cycle introduces a cast of ordinary Upper Midwesterners facing illness, fading memories and everyday hardship, and finds strength in the fragile community that forms under one roof. It's his third album for Smithsonian Folkways, following Last of the Better Days Ahead and Little Sun.

For this one, Parr teamed up with drummer Dave King of The Bad Plus, a fellow Minnesotan whose loose, genre-blending percussion gives the songs a restless pulse. The title track sets the scene and introduces the characters, its story split into two movements played as one long take. "Duluth 1964" looks back with a storyteller's eye, while "Mother Sara" and "Bank Robber" fill out the cast with plainspoken tenderness.

It's a quietly raucous, deeply humane record that asks to be heard from the first note to the last. Parr has spent more than two decades chronicling ordinary lives in song, and this might be his most ambitious statement yet.
