Jeff Walker, Bill Steer, Michael Amott and Ken Owen recorded at Parr Street Studios in their home city with producer Colin Richardson, and came out with something cleaner, catchier and far more ambitious. It even earned them a US major-label release, the only one of their career, while H.R. Giger's sculpture Life Support 1993 gave it one of the most striking covers in metal.

Steer and Amott are the stars here, trading harmonised leads that sing as much as they slice. "Buried Dreams" kicks the doors in with a riff that melodic death metal bands have been chasing ever since, the title track pairs a crushing groove with an unforgettable hook, and "No Love Lost" moves at a stomping mid-pace that makes Walker's snarled vocals land even harder. "This Mortal Coil" adds a dose of galloping precision.

Amott left after the sessions and went on to found Arch Enemy, which makes Heartwork a snapshot of a lineup at its peak. For anyone who loves metal with both teeth and tunes, it belongs near the front of the shelf.
