The genuinely surprising thing about this record is how bright it sounds despite titles that promise nothing but gloom, melancholy running underneath rather than dominating outright.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDark Wings sets the tone, catchy enough to border on pop without losing any weight. Queen of the Dead brings in Maria Nesh and Sarah Kitteringham for a genuinely stacked vocal arrangement, Serenades leans furthest into the record's tenderness, and Star-Crossed Love closes the emotional arc with the melodrama the title demands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA debut album that arrives sounding like a band already several records into a career.
