Eight songs, under forty minutes, no wasted motion. Following Opvs Contra Natvram, Nergal and company trimmed the sprawl and sharpened the knives.

The Shadow Elite opens the album at full charge, and Sowing Salt, one of its three singles, keeps the pace punishing. The title track, the first song unveiled from the record, swaggers with the band's trademark blasphemous fire, while longer pieces like O Venvs, Come! give them room to build atmosphere, theatre and slow, creeping dread.

Nergal's vocals are as commanding as ever, a guttural sermon delivered from somewhere below the stage, and the production gives every cymbal crash and tremolo run room to breathe without losing any of the weight. The tight running time works in its favour, too, leaving the whole thing feeling like one sustained, unrelenting rite.

For longtime disciples, it is a reminder that Behemoth still write some of the most imposing extreme metal around, and the gold pressing makes a fitting altar piece.
