The pair went back years, and you can hear that history in every exchange. Blakey's lineup at the time featured Bill Hardman on trumpet, Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone and Spanky DeBrest on bass, a hard-charging crew handed a book of Monk compositions and asked to make them swing.

They do, gloriously. "Evidence" opens the set with its famously jagged stops and starts, Blakey answering every angular phrase with a crack of the snare. "In Walked Bud" bounces with sly good humour, and "Blue Monk" settles into a deep, unhurried blues that gives Griffin room to roar. Griffin's own "Purple Shades" closes the original programme with a smoky, after-hours feel, a reminder that the saxophonist brought his own ideas to the date.

This Spanish import adds bonus material to the classic six-track session, pressed on heavyweight red vinyl. It's a meeting of two musicians who understood each other completely, and it sounds as lively today as it must have in the studio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Art_Blakey-Art_Blakeys_Jazz_Messengers_With_Thelonious_Monk_Red_Spain_Import.jpg?v=1793879579
https://vinyl.com/products/art-blakey-art-blakeys-jazz-messengers-with-thelonious-monk-red-spain-import
