Marian Gold and company had no interest in repeating Forever Young. Instead they made a sprawling, restless record that pulls in jazz shadings, club rhythms and art-rock drama, and it turned out to be the final Alphaville album to feature Ricky Echolette.

Fools opens the door with a bright, melancholy hook, while The Impossible Dream swells into a big, aching pop moment that deserved a far wider audience.
