The production is lean and unvarnished, which suits songs steeped in bad nights and lost loves, delivered with a wink as often as a wince.

Cringe opens the record with nervy urgency, while Nose Over Tail and My Little Needle show off Skiba's gift for turning bleak confessions into shout-along choruses. Clavicle cuts deep with its blend of tenderness and dread, a formula the band would return to again and again over the years.

Underneath the sneer is a remarkable ear for melody, and you can hear the seeds of everything that came later, from the gothic imagery to the bruised romanticism. It is short, sharp and endlessly replayable, the kind of record that gets passed between friends like a well-kept secret.

For punk fans, Goddamnit is an essential starting point, and on vinyl it sounds every bit as urgent and unpolished as it did the year it first arrived.
