Dryden Mitchell's elastic vocals and Terry Corso's springy guitar work gave the band a personality that stood out among the heavier, angrier acts of the day, and the songs never forgot to bring a hook.

Smooth Criminal is the headline, a muscular, tongue-in-cheek reworking of the Michael Jackson classic that became the band's global calling card. Movies matches it for sheer catchiness with a wistful, sing-along chorus, while Courage kicks the record off with a jolt of nervy energy.

Beneath the radio hits sits a surprisingly varied album, swinging from punchy, palm-muted riffs to sunnier, almost pop-punk moments, with a rhythm section that keeps everything bouncing. It is the sound of a young band having the time of its life and not caring who knows it.

Across four sides, closing on the sprawling Universe, ANThology still plays like a snapshot of a very specific, very loud moment in rock, and it holds up better than plenty of its peers.
